In article titled “Churches advised to join 21st century“: 75 percent of U.S. churches are dying or declining, and 24 percent are growing only by playing “musical saints,” picking up people who have left other churches. Only 1 percent are growing by reaching out to those who don’t feel at home in a conventional church setting. I wonder how many megachurches (over 1000 in attendance on a weekend, by this article‘s measure) fit in the 24%-musical-saints category, and if it’s akin to the phenomena of Wal-mart-coming-to-town-and-closing-down-the-mom-and-pop-stores, but with churches. Some say that “baby boomers” will put their money behind building those big buildings and production-like Sunday services, while the next gen isn’t into that.. well, yes and no, some of the prominent next gen church ministries around still look like the predecessor, except louder and edgier.. for me, I like being a part of a big worship service b/c of quality music and message, but I also want the real authentic relationships.. I want both.
