This week I received this email from Tom Steers about an event for Southern California ministry leaders (and those that’d travel in for it). The AALC mentioned in email below refers to an “Asian American Leadership Conference.”

You don’t have to be Asian American to attend. I’d go just to hear James Choung. When James gave a similar talk during a workshop at Urbana 09, it was standing room only and overflowing; must have had over 500 people there! I had to shoot this video sitting on the floor myself.]

THE GATHERING of Asian American church and parachurch leaders will meet again!

Save this date: Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010
We will meet at 10:00 am at Evergreen Baptist Church-L.A. (1255 San Gabriel Blvd., Rosemead, 91770)

We will hear from James Choung, the new director of Asian American Ministries of IVCF. He will speak about his new book, TRUE STORY: A Christianity Worth Believing In.

We will be treated to a free lunch @ noon!

Again, the purpose of The Gathering is to encourage you, to re-connect with Kingdom laborers, and to make new connections. Louis Lee will also be with us to share about a new AALC in April or May, 2012.

I need your confirmation that you are coming in order to have an accurate meal count. Please email me back! If you are interested in going to this event, please e-mail Tom Steers directly at [email protected]

Also, these events are always open to any key leader that you want to invite. There are 100′s of key leaders that we are not in email connection with. So, we rely heavily on you to invite others! Please do!

Just let me know attendees for our meal count!

With you for HIS eternal victories!

Tom

I’m back home now, had been away since Saturday. That’s 5 nights in a hotel bed. While soft and cushy, couldn’t get the temperature right. More on the warmer hot side of things by middle of the night.

Just sent out a dozen personal video emails to thank the dozen deputized bloggers who provided way more #i3 coverage than I imagined! Know it’s way faster than a thank you card via snail mail. And with us new media types, maybe video email can be just as meaningful and personal. At least I hope it’s received as such.

A quick video update before I turn in. Need to catch up on my sleep deficit, and taking a long weekend off.

I’ll likely blog from a full-size keyboard some time this weekend, so you can read some of my germinating ideas. So glad and grateful I had the freedom to do lots of research & development during the tech breakout, as we had to improvise what to do with 2 out of 3 session speakers unable to be there.

Here’s one of the recorded segments of the tech breakout, a portion of interview with Terry Storch and Bobby Greunewald by Cynthia Ware — how’d it turn out?

had a blast here in Dallas and so much has happened and it’d take hours to write out what i’d want to write out…

got to worship on sunday at cross timbers… celebrate a friend’s birthday + chinese new year simultaneously… breakfast w dave lee (harvest community church) later this morning…

connected with 100+ people at innovation3, a 1-time-only 1-of-a-kind event; saw bloggers and twitterers generate so much buzz that it showed up on top trends in twitter search page.. amazing how much content & conversation #i3 packed into 26 hours.. Bent Tree Bible Fellowship one amazing host w excellent people who provided vital help; so generous, so collegial..

spontaneously used 3 web tools for tech breakout session, where 2 of 3 presenters couldn’t make it, and @cynthiaware and @kentshaffer masterfully pitched in; we used skype video call, ustream, and tokbox, over wifi, with at least a dozen laptops online in room too, and no bandwidth problem, 60+ joined us online with only a real-time twitter announcement… this session coulda easily been its own conference…

will write more on a real keyboard later… one regret: didnt get to eat at Little Sichuan, oh how i like it hot & spicy..

I’m brewing and stewing on a new talk titled, “Revitalizing Asian American Churches For New Generations,” which will presented to about 100+ mostly Asian American ministry leaders. I thought of using a word like “reimagining” or “rethinking” or “reinventing”, but anticipating a wider range of theological praxis in the audience, I went with the more congenial word “revitalizing” to imply ‘new life.’ I’ll have 30 minutes to speak plus 15 minutes of Q&A. Wanted to open it up here to get your comments on what I’ve got to say in this half hour to make it most meaningful.

Here is the official wording of an invitation to those of you in Southern California — Los Angeles and Orange County area, and those of you who’d travel farther out for this rare occasional event [update: facebook event invite] –

Please join us at:

THE GATHERING…

…of SoCal Asian American pastors, staffs, missionaries, and parachurch leaders…

*** A free lunch, thanks to the Evangelical Christian Credit Union

Come and bring an associate or co-laborer, but please RSVP to tomsteers@… for our lunch count. IMPORTANTissimo! (or leave message at 310-…)

DJ will share with us about Revitalizing Asian American Churches For New Generations. He has an amazing national perspective on what the LORD is doing in Asian American churches. He has two ministry positions 1) Director of Digital Initiatives and Asian American Church Research with Leadership Network (He recently published a report for them entitled: Asian American Churches: An Introduction). 2) Executive Director of the L2 Foundation. His comprehensive personal website and blog is: www.djchuang.com He recently moved to Orange County with his artistic wife, Rachelle and their 10-year old son.

The Gathering is an informal lunch meeting for Asian American leaders in the SoCal region that takes place just once every few years. This “GATHERING” is being planned and conducted by the core planning team for the 2008 Asian American Leadership Conference. The core is: Tommy Dyo (Epic Movement, CCC), Louis Lee (MESA), Ben Shin (Talbot Seminary), Tom Steers (Asian American Ministries, The Navigators), and Ron Sugimoto (MESA board member).

“Be eager and strive earnestly to guard and keep the harmony and oneness of the SPIRIT in the binding power of peace.” Ephesians 4:3, Amplified Bible.
