How can those emotional maturity be developed? Let’s not the “child” designation trip us up. Maturity is not mastery or perfection; most of us have areas where we can develop more emotional maturity. Here’s a fidelity 401k great list of practical how-to’s from Enhancing Children’s Emotional Development (Leah Davies, M.Ed.) In essence, it’s facilitating someone to handle their emotions by processing them together. [read the entire article for full context]

fyi, Jame Loder's "The Logic of the Spirit: Human Development in Theological Perspective" offers a good theological anthropology that interacts with developmental psychology such as erikson's and piaget's. maybe it'll be healthy to open the discussion up to address the interaction between theology and psychology in the ministry context.

also, how would this all relate to family systems? considering that peter scazzero takes most of his ideas from Edwin Friedman's Generation to Generation, i think looking into how friendman presents his ideas will be insightful for this discussion. although scazzero's presentation is more individualistic, friendman did not think of it this way. hence, family SYSTEMS theory.

DJ,
My parents are raising my nephew and he's got some pretty decent emotional baggage that will be a challenge for him as he grows up. I can see how these steps will be really helpful. These thoughts really reverberate as well within the context of where I've been growing lately. Having just finished reading The Emotionally Healthy Church, my head's been wrapping around areas in my own life that I need to continue to grow in. Thanks for the post, it's applicable on a whole lot of levels.
